Over recent years, attention to the urgency of climate change and creating a more sustainable future has risen significantly. However, many people still have not changed their behavior and have gone greener even though they know about the severe consequences. One of the biggest contributors to environmental problems remains the mobility sector with the highest CO2-emissions after the energy industries in Germany in 2018. However, sustainable mobility modes like public transportation still play a subordinate role compared to private car use in Germany. Whereas the main reason for that in rural areas is the lack of adequate offers, public transportation in cities and peripheral areas in Germany is very well developed – but many people still use private cars.

Green information systems (IS) provides a promising research agenda to tackle environmental problems with IT-enabled solutions. Although there are different approaches to induce behavior changes, digital nudges have proven to be an effective instrument within the Green IS field. Therefore, this research aims to provide novel insights into digital nudging for pro-environmental behavior within the mobility sector. Theoretical and practical contributions are expected for the Green IS field, politics, and society to support solutions to one of the urgent challenges of the 21st century.
