Profile

The TH Ingolstadt (THI) with its approx. 6,000 students, is positioned in the two core areas of technology and business. True to its vision of itself as a mobility university, around one third of the 60-degree courses are tailored towards automotive and aviation sectors. Another focus of the THI lies in the topics of digitalisation, internationalisation, and entrepreneurship.

In addition to teaching the THI places a special emphasis on research, in which around 15 million euros – one third of the university’s total expenditure– flow. At the THI, some 200 research assistants are active in publicly funded and industry-financed research projects. The THI cooperates with 185 research and industrial partners across the globe. The three institutes – the CARISSMA research and test centre, the Institute for Innovative Mobility and the Institute for New Energy Systems are integrated into the research map of the HRK.

As the Bavarian AI hub for mobility the THI is developing AI applications in the mobility sector with its research. The key to this is the Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AININ), for whose launch 34 core-funded posts are being created. One of the research focuses of the centre will be AI-based mobility solutions.

A Fraunhofer Application Centre for Networked Mobility and Infrastructure will also be established at the THU, which will cooperate closely with the Fraunhofer Institute for Traffic and Infrastructure Systems in Dresden as the parent institute.

In vehicle safety research, the THI is internationally renowned thanks to its CARISSMA Research and Test Centre. This represents Germany’s leading scientific centre for vehicle safety and employs around 80 scientists.

Currently approx. 100 doctoral candidates at the THI exploit the opportunity of a cooperative doctorate, also within the framework of BayWISS. They are supervised by the university’s own Graduate Centre. Within the scope of BayWISS, the THI is the lead university of the Joint Academic Partnership Mobility and Traffic.
